Mine is a qualified recommendation. A real lumber yard's materials are typically better quality, but generally more expensive, but that is offset where lumber yard service is usually superior in every way. Menards often screws up an order, and then takes forever to rectify a problem, if they make it better at all. My brother and I have been using them for about 40 years, and it is mostly because of price. The special order is special if they get it right. If you can afford to use a lumber yard, do it.

Overall, these are very well-run stores. It seems that a shortage of employees makes it difficult to find someone to help you. Prices always seem to beat everyone else's, and the range of products is excellent. They have the best return policy of any stores I have ever visited; this is very handy when you are working on a project and either make a change in plans or complete the project with fewer parts than you anticipated. The rebate mail-in system is cumbersome--can't understand why they don't do like some stores and print the rebate directly on the back of the receipt so it can be used the next time you come into the store. That would eliminate the need for running an expensive rebate center. Rebates on low-priced items end up being worthless because it's not worth spending 60 cents on a stamp to mail in the coupon.
