My 90 year old father was in transitional care at Woodbury Care Center for several weeks following heart surgery. He was very weak and dizzy so he needed assistance to go to the bathroom and he was supposed to receive assistance walking for exercise to regain some strength. They told us not to assist him ourselves because we were not trained to do it. He is not a complainer but complained to us that they rarely responded to the call button. Once while we were there he pushed it because he needed to go to the bathroom and it took over an hour for anyone to respond. We had checked to make sure the call light was on in the hall and it was. We complained but got no response. When we had a care meeting with the staff and an outside social worker the nurse was angry when we told them about this and claimed they always respond to call lights. When the social worker mentioned that he looked as if he had lost weight and looked weaker than when she'd seen him last, one of the aides chastised my dad for not exercising more even though no one ever came to assist him! When we moved him to Southview Acres for subsequent transitional care he gained weight, got stronger and had a more positive attitude almost right away.

Very high quality physical and occupational therapists. Nurses range from excellent/very good (most) to mediocre (a few). We had a few experiences with nurses who promised prompt actions or responses but never delivered. In at least two instances, we also thought that nurses were lying to cover up one of their oversights (they missed a scheduled injection but put it in the patient's chart anyway, for instance).
