Dale did some work for me in 2008 and it was fine. When I recently (Sept 2013) re-contacted him however he was pretty short and not interested in doing any additional work, as he claimed he was backed up for the next 8 months. He did not refer me to anyone else and pointedly said he wouldn't do that. I'd look elsewhere -- he's obviously too busy to take on additional work.

I hired Northern Virgina Tile to redo a shower niche that a bath remodeler improperly constructed (from framing to laying tile to grouting). The semi-retired father showed up promptly for four days and was very pleasant to work with. Unfortunately, he damaged surrounding tile around niche and even though I supplied spares, he couldn't cut them to the correct size and chipped them horribly. He gave up on tearing out the back of the niche and instead installed Kerdi membrane (improperly) over the old tile and attempted to lay the new mosaic over it. The result was crooked tile -- didn't align horizontally or vertically; lots of lippage even on the perfectly level surround; and trim cut w/o mitering and installed so edges didn't align. I'll give him an A for honesty -- he admitted it wasn't good work and only charged me $450. But since I had to hire someone else to tear out the mess, it wasn't even worth $450.

UPDATE (11/4/2012): Nearly 10 months after I had Harmon Robertson attempt to rebuild my shower niche, Dale Robertson of Northern Virginia Tile requested I retract my review, saying his father is not affiliated with Northern Virginia Tile, so his company should not be rated negatively for the "referral." Nothing in my initial call to Northern Virginia Tile nor my dealings with Harmon Robertson ever clued me into the fact he was an independent party who was not only unaffiliated with Northern Virginia Tile but also unlicensed himself and unaffiliated with any contractor licensed in Viriginia. And other reviews I'd read of Northern Virginia Tile have mentioned his father's work, so I had no reason to suspect I was hiring an unlicensed handyman. Dale Robertson did offer to attempt to recover the fee I'd paid his father or to redo the work, but I'd already had the shower niche rebuilt by FBT Tile many months earlier. So take my review with a grain of salt -- I have no idea what quality of work Dale Robertson does or whether his father is or is not affiliated with Northern Virginia Tile. Customers who actually get Dale Robertson to do the job might have a different experience than mine.

Dale arranged for us to meet him at a tile store to pick out tile after months of waiting. We waited and waited at the store and Dale never showed up. We called him and he said something came up. We tried to contact him again but never heard back. I can't rate his work but his customer service is horrible.
