Been a customer of Navy Federal for 40+ years. Several years ago went to Navy Federal with a check from my insurance company for wind damage for about $8k, made out to me and Navy Federal as I had a mortgage with them. Wanted to deposit the check in Navy Federal to pay down the mortgage. Navy Federal would not deposit the check until I filled out forms, and provided evidence that the repairs would be done. I never missed a payment in over 2 decades. My balance was $15k. If they would have cashed the check it would be about $7k, or about 3% for a house would appraise at $300k. Talked to several representatives. No common sense or consideration. It had taken me weeks and 3 adjusters to get all the damage covered. At this point it was easier just to pay off the mortgage. Get the letter. Sent it and the check back to the insurer and get money sent only to me. Should have quit then. Recently went to Reston branch to get cash from savings. Always before the teller counts the money in front of you. Not this time. Just got handed the bills. Put it in my pocket. Took it out at home. Was $20 short. Called, initially told they would credit my account. But shortly thereafter was called and told their camera system showed I got the full amount. Later, when closing our 3 accounts. Learned the only camera is over the tellers desk. It couldn't have verified the amount as I was handed a stack of bills. Navy federal then said they have a mechanical bill counting system that they consider infallible. Should have been easy to audit the bill counting system to see if it had an extra $20. They didn’t bother. You’re supposed to trust them 100% while their trust in you is zero, even after 40+ years. No longer a member.

Why is transaction with NFCU difficult (wire transfer, starting a debit card, or just asking for information for examples)? Also, there is an interminable wait and way too many questions when just calling for information.

NFCU is terrific- but their mortgage processing needs improvement. They are too slow, don’t move at the same speed as other providers. Moreover the risk adverse mature of their underwriting department results in some overly onerous processes. I love NFCU but regretted doing a refi with them recently
