My 16-year-old central A/C unit had stopped running after service from a handyman; another contractor tried a few things, couldn't figure it out and stated that the compressor motor must be blown and I needed a new system, but I was skeptical. I made an appointment with BDL, which was a few days out, but fortunately they called a day early and said someone could come that day. The tech methodically traced all the internal electrical connections and got it running. He also measured the refrigerant and determined that the system had been overcharged (by the handyman in a prior visit); the extra pressure made the compressor's work harder, so they reclaimed a pound. They kept me informed throughout and told me that the compressor motor was indeed aging, but could still last a while, and when it would die, they could replace it. I was charged $250, well worth it.
