After much deliberation, we signed a service contract with Domestic & General for a fixed annual fee to cover all repairs for a year. Our microwave had failed after two years, so we felt that this might be a precursor of more major repair costs. The company assigns repairs to a firm, which in our case was Via. The repairman had to remove the microwave to find and replace the broken part, however he neglected to replace the microwave properly. The microwave was loose, which we discovered after the repairman left. We didn't know exactly what caused the microwave to be loose. We were not able to get a repairman out immediately, so we were left with a microwave we were reluctant to use until we could get it fixed so that it wouldn't fall down. A few days later another repairman came out and found that the microwave hadn't been screwed in, fixed the problem in minutes and left.

KitchenAid set me up with Via for refrigerator loss of cooling and sold me a 1-year service contract as part of the deal, which covered the repair. Repair person came on Sunday (thanks!) and diagnosed the problem as a faulty defrost control. Repair could not be completed until later the next week but to get a temporary solution he advised to manually defrost by leaving the freezer open for a day (I shortened the time by using a fan). Another tech came as scheduled and made the repair. I know that Checkbook recommends against service contracts but this one looked satisfactory given the cost of the contract and the cost of repairs these days.

This was a warranty repair and thus most of the "CAN'T RATE" ratings were used. The repair man was excellent. The delays which were experienced were due to parts non availability. Once all the parts were available the repairman did a superior job. The other bright spot was that Via was able to keep the same repairman on this job from start to a successful completion.
