How we gather (and how to interpret) our data

To have something to sell to a wide range of buyers, most manufacturers offer a dizzying array of options (laptops, desktops, tablets, Chromebooks, and 2-in-1 tablet/laptop combos) and several models with a wide range of capabilities and price points. Here’s how to find the right gadget.

Buy from a store that can advise you on what products will serve you best, how to get started using products, and how to solve problems.

Consumers’ Checkbook’s undercover shoppers collected prices from major online retailers for 34 carefully specified and configured devices. We found that some retailers charge as much as 20 percent more than others for the same products.

Don’t pay a computer repair shop’s minimum charge, possibly $75 or more, only to discover that the problem had a quick fix.

Even in our newer-is-better tech world, it often still makes sense to try to get your computer repaired before buying a new one.
