Bettar's Kensington, MD showroom, bland as some pristine Scandinavian bathhouse, exudes integrity and soft sell. Without even a real storefront, you have to hike up an exterior staircase just to enter a showroom with baby blue walls lined with white kitchen appliances. The room was barren of decorative hype--posters and displays hawking Bettar's various brands like KitchenAid, Whirlpool, GE and SpeedQueen. It was barren, too, of sales staff until five or ten minutes after my arrival when the saleswoman appeared. I needed a washer and dryer to replace 30-year-old GE's. She explained the virtues and drawbacks of each and forthrightly spelled out what we would spend: $2,060 plus $123.60 for the sales tax, or $2,183.60, for twin Speed Queens I selected and their five-year warranty, their delivery and installation and hauling away the GE's, plus Bettar's own servicing. The price was in the ball park of other dealers. The contract allowed for added charges, unknowable in the showroom, if, upon delivery, the installers determined a need for new cords or a vent. When they arrived, five days after I stopped in the showroom and one day ahead of schedule, they were quick, competent, neat and amiable. I'm wary of touting a business without caveats. But what you see at Bettar is what you get, without haggling, harassment, pressure or special "deals." We trust them. Two years ago we bought a KitchenAid dishwasher there. We have been fully satisfied with it and with Bettar's servicing. We'll be back.

Went to their office Nov. 1 knowing the washer/dryer set I wanted and got a quote, ordered it,and the salesman said it would likely be available to deliver Nov.5/6. I called Nov. 3 to check the status and no one called back. Again I called Bettar Nov. 5, they informed me delivery would be Nov.6 - Nov. 12. I asked if there was any way to accelerate the date as their warehouse is in Baltimore (I am in Bethesda). Calling back, the salesman then informed me in fact the order could not be processed at all, due to backorder of the product at the factory (Whirlpool). So their incompetence means I wasted a full week of time with a nonfunctioning dryer in the meantime. It is simply inconceivable to me that the information on the backorder was not immediately available on someone's computer screen as soon as I put in the order. I got the impression that Bettar really did not care at all about customer service for its sales division.

They took hours going over all the options for the appliance we needed, plus they actually understood and knew a lot about what they were selling. Excellent service and advice
