International Auto Repair was once owned and run by a Mazda-trained super mechanic named "Blu" (or "Blue" - we customers never really knew how it was spelled) who retired from the business in 2019. He offered wonderful service and wonderful prices and a great crew, but in a rather ancient facility. Emaelaf Woldeyohannes (Ethiopian) has taken over Blu's business and added the E&D to the garage name. He has renovated the office and the repair garages and installed much new repair equipment. His crew goes out of their way to very nicely greet and treat customers. While they have been in business a few years, they still seem to be feeling their way to developing 100% proper customer service in all rating categories. While the price for my work was satisfactory to me, I have no way to make a comparison with what other shops would charge. I would note that the facility improvements, particularly all of the garage equipment upgrades, including lifts, cost money. So, this limits how low service prices can be charged. I went to E&D to have my 2025 annual maintenance done on my Mazda 6, which consists largely of changing the oil and oil filter, inspecting connections, etc., and to repair a busted (hanging) interior bumper part so I could pass an upcoming VA inspection. I was not quoted a price and I did not request one because I wanted to test the service. All the work took about 2 hours. To make a long story short, I was told that the total cost would have been $400, but there would be no charge for the bumper repair, reducing the total cost to $333.00. It was $280.00 for labor and $50.00 for parts (synthetic oil and filter), and $3.00 tax. How much should a synthetic oil change cost? Did the mechanics perform the Mazda maintenance inspections – no leaks at connections, belts in good order, etc.? The Kelly Blue book Estimate of Cost for Mazda Oil Change Near Alexandria, VA - 22301 - Fair Repair Range - is $135 - $199 – this includes parts and labor. While oil changes can be made quickly, labor costs are still a factor. Online sites say to expect to pay between $41 and $52 for labor, depending on the shop. These must be very old estimates, because 2025 online site Auto Leap says the mechanic’s rate for Virginia in 2025 is $135 to $145 per hour. On my bill, labor was a total of $280.00. E&D says its standard labor fee is $150 per hour. So the oil change would represent less than two hours of work. So there are many hidden costs that a garage owner must recover in an hourly labor fee and the number of hours that must be charged to recover those costs. You have the cost of the initial investment, the structure, the equipment, the employees. Mortgage. Loans. You must pay employee health benefits and contribute to social security . You must advertise to attract business. Whether you make any money or not, you must pay federal, state, and local income taxes, as well as appropriate property taxes. Also, from what you earn, you must set money aside in a “rainy day” fund for when you are not making budget. Etc., etc. No two dealers' cost-fulfillment needs are alike. So, the new E&D is open 7 days a week, morning till night (8 pm, or as some information says, 10 pm) with well-trained staff and mechanics, in a modern facility. You will be pleasantly greeted . Of 23 verified CarFax customer reviews, 91% gave E&D a 5-out-of-5, Five Star rating. They are worth trying. Compare them with other garages if you can. P.S. As an aside, and not related to E&D, before you agree to a synthetic oil change at a garage, you might want ask what brand and quality of synthetic oil a is going to be used.

This shop charges a $135 diagnostic fee. I asked whether any of that fee would be credited back to the cost of the repair, and was told that $40 of it would be. When I came to pick up the car, the $40 credit had not be applied to the repair that had been completed: replacing a sensor that was causing the car to nearly stall out. I asked why the credit was not applied and got a couple of answers. The first answer was that because I declined some of the work they had identified. I declined the additional work because they wanted to replace the rear brakes, but I knew from another garage that there was 40% wear left on the brakes. The attendant hedged, and said he only recommended that repair because it might be needed soon. I reminded him that I had not asked him to check the brakes, I asked that the stalling problem be fixed. He then shifted his story, noting that I had told him that new spark plugs had recently been installed, so they had to check that. I reminded him that the mechanic was in the office when we were discussing the car initially, and he said the plugs would not be an issue. So finally, he told me to call back and ask for the manager. I did, and while I never did get the manager, the attendant told me he had discussed my complaint and they applied the $40 credit. So the good news is that they did fix the car. The bad news is that they were not being straight with me, and tried to push work that wasn't needed.

Prices are decently competitive to other independent repair shops. The owner is personable and knowledgeable. However, a couple of times he was not there and I dealt with the head mechanic who was less personable. Location is quite convenient to where I live. Tiny waiting area. Did have to bring my car back for one item that was not properly corrected. They came highly recommended to me by a friend of a friend. I might try them again but not sure.
