Exterminators Articles
How to Find a Good Exterminator
Most pests can be eliminated without paying a pro. But if you have a problem you can't handle on your own (or don't want to handle), we have advice and ratings for finding the best exterminators.
How to Get Rid of Cockroaches
The best way to avoid and get rid of roaches is good sanitation. You can also eliminate access to your kitchen and other likely infestation sites by applying caulk to seal cracks and other entry points.
How to Get Rid of Termites
While an invasion of roaches or other bugs is merely unpleasant, termites can actually wreck the joint. Fortunately, the damage they cause spreads slowly, and you usually have lots of time to react before they do grave damage.
How to Get Rid of Mice and Rats
Start by eliminating their access to food. Seal items in your pantry, and place garbage in sturdy, tight containers. Then, keep rodents out by closing off all openings to your home more than 1/4 inch in size.
How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes
Zillions of products promise to keep mosquitoes away, from wristbands to speakers that emit ultrasonic noise to electronic repellers to aromatic plants. Many of these claims are bogus; some have a little bit of merit.
How to Get Rid of Bedbugs
Resilient and often pesticide-resistant, bedbugs are notoriously difficult to control.
How to Get Rid of Ants
You can control most household ants fairly easily without paying an exterminator.
How to Get Rid of Fleas
You should be able to control most flea problems without bringing in a pro. If you do hire one, a single visit should do the trick.
How to Get Rid of Clothes and Carpet Moths
Household moths feed on animal fibers—wool, silk, feathers, leathers—and they can ruin your stuff. Their larvae does the damage, grazing in the dark on clothes and carpets.
How to Get Rid of Pantry Moths
Pantry moths are not dangerous, but they are a nuisance and hard to eliminate.
How to Get Rid of Carpenter Bees
These jumbo bees look scary, but they are valuable pollinators and pose no threat to humans.
Minimizing Pesticide Risks
Most pests can be controlled by improving sanitation and blocking off access points. If you must use pesticides, read all warning labels and do what you can to minimize risks of exposure.
Do Effective ‘Natural’ Pest Control Remedies Exist?
Many companies claim to practice “green” or “natural” pest control. But is it real, and does it work? For most pests, there are non-chemical treatment options. Here are ones exterminators often use.
