The job was a re-finishing and partial replacement of a large master bedroom oak floor. They recommended a "Swedish" finish, with the assurance that it would be a 2-week process from start to finish (moving back into room.) The toxicity of the chemicals was extraordinary and we later found out that the chemical they use is illegal in several states--in California, it is allowed to be sold only in quart containers. The contractor had to wear a complete hazmat suit and respirator, but he claimed that it was fine for us to be around these chemicals. The job was done in good hot weather and we used fans 24 hours a day. IT TOOK FIVE MONTHS TO MOVE BACK INTO THE ROOM! The fumes, which are heavier than air, penetrated the entire house for months and were so bad that we had to sleep in our garden house for several weeks. Their advice as to time frames for moving furniture back onto the floor did not even match the manufacturer's specs and we would have ruined the floor had we not done our own research. The severe outgassing time was difficult to research, but the manufacturer hinted that it was months rather than the days this contractor claimed. The experience was a nightmare and totally unnecessary if the contractor had been honest about the process and the many other good options to this finish. There is not even anything special about the final result, certainly nothing to justify the toxicity and unbelievable inconvenience of their process.
