This company re-built my deck a number of years ago and it looks like new. Nice people to deal with as well.

In looking for a contractor to build a deck, I was disillusioned by the lack of follow through in the independent contractors I had sought quotes from so I turned to a professional company. My first interaction with NOVA Exteriors had their salesman in my home going through what they could provide me and gave me a quote on the spot. The salesman used tactics akin to a used-car salesman such as giving me a price that was only good if I signed a contract that night, as well as promising me two other specific things: removing and hauling away the iron steps and getting his permit runners to assist me with another project. First, the price was absolute sticker shock. It was double what everybody else had given me. My $8K deck was all of a sudden $16K. He justified the price because he was running the permits (which for DC I’m told can cost upwards of $1500, but if I did it myself, it would have been a significant hassle, delayed the project but cost much, much less), That their workmanship was superior (routed boards, using a single length of board…) I got them down to $13K to build the deck, so they were negotiable, but they ended up selling me a Cadillac when I only wanted a Ford. Additionally, the 2 things that I was promised didn’t end up coming to fruition and actually cost me more in the long run. So basically, their sales tactics are questionable and I have described the experience as having a snake-oil salesman/used-car salesman in my home. I am disappointed in myself allowing me to be manipulated into signing a contract that night, and at my own dining room table. A couple days later, I decided I was crazy for having done so, but the small-print had me locked into the contract after 3 days or forfeit my deposit. So I was screwed. Then they came back to me saying I had to sign some other form because I was on a Virginia vs. DC contract and I refused to sign it, thinking I could get out of the contract that way, and that the 3-day period would restart. Turns out that wasn’t true. I resigned myself to move forward with the project. My project manager, David Wicker, was ok. A complete reversal from the customer service I got from the salesman, although there were a few issues. First, he attempted to schedule an immediate start (after 2 months of waiting for permits and such). I was excited about that, but was delivered the architectural drawings at the same time as scheduling. Given the permit was the long pole in the tent, these drawings should have been to me for review long in advance of this interaction. The drawings had the stairs in the wrong place, which I was surprised about given I had given my salesman a rough drawing of what I wanted and the amount of time the drawings had been likely done at that point.. It took an additional 4 weeks, 2 more sets of drawings and some heated conversation to convince Mr. Wicker that his people were advising him wrong on DC regulations about where the stairs could be (why was I the one who had to tell him that?) … finally, with correct drawings in hand, it took another couple weeks to get the ball rolling. So I gave the company low marks for promptness and responsiveness. And while they didn’t screw up the actual deck building, I don’t feel the process of supplying the drawings properly on the first try warranted anything more than an “adequate.” The actual deck, upon being built, is very nice. As I said, I bought the Cadillac of a deck. They did produce, but I paid out the nose for it. I did have 2 issues with the completion of the project. First, they left a mess in my yard claiming their truck had a flat, delaying picking up the trash for days. This trash didn’t just include leftover wood, but also included empty bags of concrete, boxes of materials etc. that blew around my yard and down the street. I had to clean it up myself. That was a foul. Secondly, even though the workers claim they didn’t touch the electrical around my A/C unit – I find it highly suspect that my A/C went out the same day the workers blew a breaker on a different outdoor power outlet. (Info: The deck was built over/around my A/C unit). My HVAC technician diagnosed my A/C issue as the plug for my outdoor unit was plugged in wrong. It was plugged in just fine the day before when the A/C was working… The workers sat there, all day, in their truck waiting for me to come home from work to switch the power back on. You can’t tell me they didn’t look for another outlet and at least look at the A/C outlet, perhaps unplugging it and plugging it back in (albeit wrong). When I questioned Mr. Wicker about the incident and asked him if they were responsible to reimburse me the cost of the HVAC tech visit… he agreed that it sounded suspect but ultimately put faith in his workers instead of doing the right thing by the customer and reimbursing my $89 HVAC fee. That is not emblematic of a company who desires repeat customers. All they care about is the bottom line. I will never seek or recommend their work again and I’m glad this project is over. Oh wait, it isn’t. Their trash is still in my yard.
