My elderly mother with Alzheimer's was a resident first in assisted living, then in memory care after she had a series of falls and became wheelchair bound. If you don't need a lot of assistance, the Stratford is fine. The residents are great. While my mom was there, most of the staff were hard working and very caring. The problem is they are understaffed and management isn't supportive. Management's main concern seems to be the bottom line. There was a lot of turnover in management while my mom was there. In the two years she was there, the Stratford had THREE executive directors and THREE directors of residents care. The last director of residents care seemed clueless and thank god she's gone. My mother developed a bad pressure ulcer that wouldn't heal despite treatment at a wound care center. My mom didn't want to move but she understood she could not receive the care she needed. I also had a lot of billing issues with the Stratford. These issues included not receiving a statement for months on end. Because I did not wish to be charged late fees, I created my own detailed statements. Then without any warning, my mom's care jumped thousands of dollars. Some of that was due to her increased care needs, but they also increased prices without any notice. When I told them I could get a private room in a nursing home for LESS than what they were charging, they "reviewed" my mom's care and made an adjustment. But it was a constant battle. My mom gets better and more care at her adult family home and I'm saving over $10,000 a year. Her current home isn't cheap either. It's almost $8000 a month. To be fair, my mom has been gone from the Stratford for over a year and maybe things are different. But our experience was such that I would not recommend moving your elderly loved one there. Be sure to read the state survey and look online at www.dshs.wa.gov under boarding homes.
